Ethical fashion represents a methodology to the design, production, retail, sourcing and manufacture of clothing which maximizes benefits to people and communities while minimizing impact on the environment.
Ethical Fashion aims to address the problems it sees with the way the fashion industry currently operates, often as exploitative labour, environmental damage, use of hazardous chemicals, waste, and animal cruelty. This covers a range of issues such as working conditions, exploitation, fair trade, sustainable production, the environment, and animal welfare.
Lanka Institute of Fashion Technology along with Mod’art International conducted a fashion forum on Ethical fashion at the BMICH on 5th August 2016. This forum was mainly focused on what is ethical fashion and how it is implemented.
This forum was inaugurated by the director of the institute and was followed by some guest speakers. Senior lecturer of Lanka Institute of Fashion Technology Mrs. Nishika Samarasinghe spoke on ethical fashion and eco fashion in today’s context.
Ms.Nathalie Mulot the representative of the fashion revolution in Vietnam, course coordinator for Mod’art International Vietnam delivered her ideas about what is ethical fashion and how it impacts the society. She also displayed the “True Cost” movie which was about the cloths we wear, the people who make them and the impact the industry is having on our world.
Mrs. Lakshi Kamalgoda Merchandising manager from TESCO presented the Ethical fashion practices at TESCO and its values. Followed by her speech, an open question and answer session took place where the LIFT alumni as well the current students had the opportunity to ask their doubts and conveyed their opinion on ethical fashion.
